Hanadoab (Hanadoub), Jo?l Toage (Toage means "dit is klaar") * Outjo, 12.10.1947 † . Joël Hanadoab and his mother. Grootfontein, 02.04.2007. Mother: Christofine //Aibes born 10.12.1928. She was baptised as a child. (Her mother was Luise //Khaebaetamas ("daar is nie `n beskermer vir haar nie") Hanadaos, born in November 1912 and died in 1985. Hanadaos mother died when she was a young child and she grew up in Otavi at her uncles place. Her uncle was Friedrich /Hoëses, who was a policeman in Otavi. He patrolled the area around Otavi with camels. Hanadaos moved to Otjiwaronge when she was pregnant with Christofine. Christofines father was Sebelon Gurirab. Christofine was the only child of Hanadaos. According to Joël Hanadaob, Hanadaoes was most probably baptised in Otavi.) Joël was the name of the Godfather of Hanadaob. Hanadoab's grandmother (Hanadaos) became an important person in his life. As Hanadaos was not married to Sebelon Gurirab, Hanadaos was put under Kirchenzucht. This implied that she was no longer allowed to participate in Holy Communion. During church services she was only allowed to enter the church after the completion of the liturgy. She had to sit in the last bench and would she have died during this period, she would have not been buried with a church ceremony. After a while, the pastor and congregation board would allow her to attend a "boet onderwys" (/ûba //gaus). This course would last for a year and ends with the re-admition of her in the congregation. Hanadaos bought him a prayer-book (/Gore +Khanis) which she wanted him to except as his friend. She prevented him from having friendship with other children of his age and referred him time and again to his /Gore +Khanis. She made him to go to church and forced him to attend Sunday school regularly. Whenever he asked her why she would not attend church services, she just replied, that she want him to go, since the church was of little importance to her. When he was an Evangelist, he took his Grandmother to Mariental and Kalkfeld. Hanadoab was the first born of his mother. It seemed, that Lourend Boois was the Evangelist in Outjo (??) where Hanadoab was attending Catechism Class. Lourens Boois was also leading the trumpet choir. A friend of Hanadoab, Joël Gebhardt, was attending School in Otjimbingwe and lived in the household of Hendrik Kumundu, a Damara of Windhoek, who was a principal at Otjimbingwe. Hanadoab wrote to him, asking him, if he could also join him in Otjimbingwe. Kumundu send somebody to collect him and bring him to Otjimbingwe. Here Hanadoab attended School in the years 1965-68 up to grade 5 (at the age of 21). During the School holidays Hanadoab used to travel to Outjo to his mother. His Principal was Jack Francis and teachers were Phillipus Matsuib (Herero/Damara), Gert Geibeb and David !Uirab. He continued living in Otjimbingwe from 1969 to 1970 without attending School. Hendrik Kumundu's house became the home of about 6 children, amongst them Ovambos and Damaras. Kumundu and the local ELK pastor Jakob Keister had much to do with each other, as there houses were next to each other and and as the congregation pastor, Keister was in charge of the School. After attending School, Hanadoab worked in the kitchen of Mrs. de Klerk. Mr. de Klerk was a deacon (diakoon) in the local NGK congregation. It was through the contact with pastor Jakob Keister that the possibility to become an Evangelist was opened for Hanadoab. Keister told him, that he wanted Hanadoab to be trained as an Evangelist. Hanadoab knew the mother of Claasen. She watered the garden in the Bible School in Otjimbingwe. Hanadoub attended the last Evangelist course ever held at the Paulinum. The Evangelist course had 13 students (of whom one was from ELOK). Two of these students did not pass at the end of 1971. Part of the course was held together with the Fébé course "Gemeentehelpster-Seminarie" in the following subjects: "N.T. Eksegese, Alg. Kerkgeskiedenis, Inleiding tot die O.T., Etiek en Gesangboekkunde.1 According to the Paulinum documents, Hanadoub came from Outjo/Otjimbingwe, was unmarried, 23 years old and Nama speaking. He completed the course in 1972 with the final result of 43.8%.2 His first appointment was to Keetmanshoop in 1973. The congregation pastor at that time was pastor Albertus Moutong. He was appointed to this position, because the Evangelist Salomon Kaffer was placed to Koës. In Keetmanshoop he was not authorized to do baptism, holy communion and weddings. As an Evangelist in Keetmanshoop he was no longer able to travel over the farms, since ELK was considered as the "SWAPO church/communist church" and all white farmers of the district did no longer allow ELK Evangelists to visit their farms out of fear that the Evangelists would negatively influence the farm workers. Farm workers who wanted to visit the church services had to come to town, either Maltahöhe or Keetmanshoop. Hanadoab's only travelling lead him to the reserve. In 1976 Hanadoub was transferred to Maltahöhe, were he did the work of a pastor, since the position of the pastor was vacant. The ELK had not enough pastors at this time to fill all the vacant pastor positions and was forced to place Evangelists in their position. Hanadoab said of himself, that he was happy during this time. He first used to wear a suit for services and official acts, later he was allowed to wear the official "collar" - a black shirt with a white collar. In Maltahöhe he was entitled to celebrate all sacraments, except for the wedding, because for that he needed to be a qualified marriage registrar, which was not granted to Evangelists. The congregation work in Maltahöhe was very much influenced by the majority of AMEC members in the town. In 1978 he was placed in the Omaruru congregation, where the Evangelist Daniel Claasen was already working as an Evangelist. 3 Hanadoab did not stay for long and was moved to Kalkfeld, in the same year as the congregation wanted to have Claasen to stay on. The Kleurling congregation had a church in the location (Families like Kurz and Purschel were members of the congregation. Kalkfeld was dominated by DTA members in the congregation. Hanadoab was however not troubled by their activity. The Evangelist B. Philander writes a letter to the Churchboard on the 24.01.1984 in which he describes his "familiêre problem". He is therefore transferred from Leonardville to Tamariskia/Swakopmund - Evangelist J. Hanadoab is send in his position to Leorandville - according to a Kringbestuur van Windhoek-Kring, Windhoek, 17.03.1984.4 In 1986 he was placed in the congregation Leonardville. He now enrolled in the Theological Education by Extension College of South Africa in Johannesburg and received a two years part-time training (according to the TEE method) to obtain a TEE Certificate of Competence in Theology. The TEE is part of the Methodist Church of South Africa and has it's origin in the need of the Methodist Church to train lay men and women to act as local preachers.5 The successful completion of this course was the precondition for Hanadoab's ordination in the ELK. He was ordained on the 09.10.1988 in Outjo by Kameeta, together with the young pastors Johannes Wentsteen and Kapurue. In 1989 Hanadoab was transferred to the Grootfontein congregation, where he remained until the date of the interview.
