of Otjisazu, Theobald * ?, ? † . Mentioned in "Abrechnung" von Irle (sen.).1 Came, together with Paul Kanaimba or Mbenovandu, to the deathbed of Irle's (sen.) first wife Emilie, shortly before her death in August 1888.2 Major von der Heyde hatte bereits mit den Werften der Herero die bei Kalkfontein (24km östl. von Epukiro) angeknüpft. "On the day following my [missionary Eich as the moderator of the Herero mission] arrival [in Epukiro on the 24.1.1905 with the aim to convince the Herero to surrender to the German colonial forces] I send a letter with two of my messangers [to Kalkfontein] and requested some people to come to Epukiro for a meeting. The messangers returned in the evening, together with Traugott Kauapirura and Thoebald Kandjii, to inquire details about the conditions [of surrender]. The delegation returned on the same evening. Traugott (who had been an Evangelist) told me, while he was leaving, that he himself would hand over his weapons, even if the others would refuse."3 On the 31.1.1905 the colonial army marched on the camps of Willi Maharero (a nephew of Samuel Maharero) and Traugott Tjetjoo, which they reached on the 1.2.1905. Both camps were defended by armed Herero soldiers. Eich, who had accompanied the German troops, called out for the Herero to send negotiators. It was again Traugott Kauapirura who came forward and tried to negotiate favourable conditions for the Herero. The German commander however only allowed an ultimatum of 30 minutes, which was extended for another 15 minutes, in which the Herero were supposed to hand over their weapons. When the time had expired the camps were attacked, only to discover that both Herero leaders had fled, with about 200 armed men. Eich was now send back to Epukiro. Traugott Kauapirura handed over 4 rifles and returned to Okahandja, where he was, when Eich wrote his report on the 7.3.1905. On the 11.2.1905 the transport of ca. 300 Herero started from Epukiro. Of these, only about 100 reached the Ovikokorero. 4 Married: Children: Education: Other family members connected to RMS: Mission Stations: History with the RMS: 1 RMG 1.605c:37. 2 Irle o. d.:88. 3 RMG 1.609d:15r.
