Kagab, Jantje (John) * ?, ? † . "The decline of the missionary´s influence [at Bethany in 1822], however, was also the result of internal conflicts that arose because of the ambiguities of missionary activity. Schmelen could not hinder some of his followers from participating in violent clashes with neighbouring herders. It is difficult to reconstruct the patterns of these conflicts. It seems, however, that Schmelen´s main adversaries were Vlermuis [Piet Vlermuis] and Jantje Kabag. Kagab was one of Schmelen´s assistants and probably the same Jantje Kagab, chief of the !Kharakhoen (Franzman people), who had been a prominent figure in the communities of Seidenfaden at Heirachabis and the Albrechts a Warmbad. [...] [In 1822] a bloody fight erupted [... ]. In his report, Schmelen accused Vlermuis of attempting to cut his communication ties with the colony by stealing and destroying the missionary´s journal. Schmelen blamed Kagab because he 'did rise against me and my people'. [...] The fact, though, that members of the indigenous elite, such as the !Kharakhoen (Franzman people) chief, Jantje Kagab, established close ties with the mission stations at Heirachabis, Warmbad and Bethany, shows that the process of social change was not dominated by the acculturated Oorlams. The new social units which began to arise form the nucleus of a new mission elite, with leaders like Amraal and Vlermuis, still oscillated between the different options offered on an open frontier."1 In 1838 "Envoys from other groups like Khauas people, Veldskoendraers and the Swartboois arrived at Warmbad [under Cook at that time], amongst them some veterans of the early Namibian mission stations, such as John Kagab of the !Kharakhoen (Franzman people), Adam Lambert, brother of Amral, and Piet Vlermuis."2 Married: Children: Education: Other family members connected to RMS: Mission Stations: History with the RMS: 1 Dedering 1997:119+120. 2 Dedering 1997:147. --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------
