Cooper (Kupper), Hendrik * ?, ? † . Mentioned as evangelist - without formal training - in Windhoek Bergdamara congregation in 1918 AELCRN\ELCRNArchivVIII2.3AErhebung1918u1930 p. 41, Pönnighaus describes in his report about a trip over all the farms in his district ("Erlebnisse auf Evangeliumsfahrten in Südwest"), dated September/October 1925, about his evangelists Hendrik Cooper, Michael Wimmer and "mein Ouderling" (my elder) Wilhelm /Gôagoseb who accompanied him. All three of them seemingly had the same (practical as well as clerical) functions during the 6 week long journey by oxwagon. The intimate relationship between the missionary and "his" evangelists and the distinct dependancy of the missionary on the evangelist´s service is well documented in this account of this tour over farms and to settlements in the South of Windhoek. The evangelists celebrated the services with the missionary, helped examining baptism candidates, collected membership fees, did the cooking and were needed in many of the essential tasks which formed part of the tedious and physically demanding toil of a long journey in an oxwagon. Hendrik Cooper was stationed in Okatumba-South in 1925 where "[...] he trained the people extraordinary well in singing and kept order amongst them."1 Daniel Vries (der "alte Evangelist") and Hendrik Cooper are sick for two month in 1925. Pönnighaus writes: "Die kalte Zeit hat ihnen bei ihrem schweren Dienst Gelenkrheumatismus gebracht."2 Daniel Vries leaves the active service of the RMS in 1927. His successor in the Nama-congregation in Windhoek is Fritz !Gawaxab (his brother is an elder in the congregation).3 Married: Children: Education: Other family members connected to RMS: Mission Stations: History with the RMS: 1 RMG 1.704a:44ff. 2 RMG 2.533b:082+083. 3 RMG 2.533b: --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------
