His grand-grand-parents were Johannes and Maria Gertse who returned to the Cape with Rath in 1861 and settled in Eselsbank/Wupperthal. His grand-parents were Johannes and Sarah Goedeman; Johannes worked in the coppermines in Springbok, he died in 1897. His parents were Johannes (Hottie) and Elisabeth Aaron; Johannes was born on 29.6.1893 in Beukeskraal/Wupperthal.1
According to Moritz he was trained in SWA and worked in "... takgemeente Tiervley",2
