Visser, Jan * ?, ? † 12.07.1888. A so called "voorganger" in the Northern-Cape under missionary Salomon whose son Paul Visser became a famous Orlam-leader near Gibeon. His son Paul Visser married Lena Witbooi, the daughter of Kido Witbooi. Her sister was Griet Witbooi. While her father had established Gibeon in 1863, she was still living with her in-law family at the Oranje. Paul Visser and his family only moved to Gibeon later - in the years when Olpp starting to work in Gibeon (1868) - and the friction between the two family heads immediately started to develop. Due to this friction, Paul Visser and his family settled at /Girixas, a days journey by ox wagon north of Gibeon.1 "Visser, Paul. Born ?, died 12.7.1888. A Witbooi leader and, in retorspect, a key figure in Hendrik Witbooi's rise to centralised leadership. According to some oral traditions, Visser's father, Jan, served as pastor to the Witboois when they lived in southern Namaland. Paul was their schoolteacher. Married to Moses's sister, Lena, he and his own following only settled in Gibeon after 1868. The first missionary reports mentioning him already comment on his rivalry with Moses Witbooi, who placed him in charge of /Girixas, a considerable distance away from Gideon. Aided by several Nama leaders, he openly challenged Moses' chieftaincy in October 1887, and died in battle against Hendrik Witbooi."2 Mentioned by Vedder as the son-in-law of Kido Witbooi a Griqua who kept the congregation together.3 Married: Children: Education: Other family members connected to RMS: See Evangelist Visser, Windhoek 1910.4 Mission Stations: History with the RMS: † 12.7.1888 1 Report of Olpp in BRMG 1872:139. 2 Heywood 1996: 249. 3 Vedder 1934:618. 4 JBRMG 1910:32. --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------
