Worked as a butcher and helped in the congregation in Mariental. "Ovambo" Was inaugurated as a deacon - after a course at the Paulinum on 11.11.1956 in the Church in Karibib - together with eight others. Vater wurde 1954 getauft durch Finnen (ELOK), Mutter wurde nicht getauft. Sie waren 3 Jungen 4 Mädchen. Er war der Älteste. Er ging 1947 ging er nach Mariental. (Kontrakt). Giert du Toit in der Küche dann bei Schlachterei. Einer aus der Dorothea sending hat ihn ermutigt eine Ausbildung zu machen. Nachdem er den Antrag für diese Ausbildung unterzeichnet und beim Magistrat war und beim Amtsartz brauchte er noch die Unterschrift des Gemeindepastors. (F. Meier, Gibeon) Er hat ihn dann für Karibib geworben. 1954 Juni ging er nach Karibib. Bei Otto Milk. Zusammen mit den Ovambos: Abel Nikodemus, Nikodems Haufiku, Markus Ngerenge (alle drei Kwanyamas). Danach wurde er nach Stampriet geschickt, war noch nicht verheiratet. Für die Buitewyke für die Ovambos auf den Farmen, denn in Stampriet waren keine Ovambos. Gewohnt hat er in Stampriet, in dem Haus von Pastor Joseph Hanse. Er ist immer für drei Wochen gelaufen, dann musste der Missionar am Ende des Monats, von Gibeon kommend, kontrollieren, wie er gearbeitet hat. R12,- im Monat. Meier hat Hansen das Geld geschickt und ihn bezahlt. Im Juni 1959 wurde er nach Mariental versetzt. 1957 heiratete er: Lena Karugas (von Stampriet) Ihr Vater: Isaak Karugab, Mutter: Anna Karugas. Er konnte nicht nach Ovamboland gehen um zu heiraten, er hat geschrieben und sie sagten ihm er solle dort eine Frau finden. Für sie machte es nicht aus, dass sie Damara war, Hauptsache sie war christlich und trank nicht. 1967 bekam er zum ersten Mal Urlaub für 14 Tage die die Kirche ihm zugestanden hatte. Er ging allein. Die Frau ging nie nach Ovamboland. He bought a "blik"-house in the location for R 25 where he stayed. The congregation supplied him with donkeys and a donkey cart. He received R 36 from the congregation as his monthly salary. In 1967 he moved into a municipality house (a brick construction), where he paid a monthly rent of R 7. He worked with all the congregation members, of all ages, both sexes and all ethnics. In 1963 he was included in the "Driehoek" (as Hamuntenya called it). According to the agreement he had to work in 8 Lutheran congregations: Mariental Stampriet Gochas Aranos Leonardville Kalkrand Maltahöhe. "2 He used to spent one month in a congregation and would stay at the dominee's house. During the interview Hamutenya could no longer remember the names of the dominees. The dominee would supply him with food, a sleeping place and transport. The work itself was just amongst ELK members. The cooperation with the dominees was very good until 1970. Through "driehoek" the work became much easier, the whole approach was much more structured. Now he would be supplied with a letter of credentials by the dominee, which safeguarded a free access to most of the farms in most of the cases. Before that he would have been chased away from the farms and was mostly treated not well. Mentioned as evangelist who was present at the conference of evangelists in October 1971 in Okahandja,3 from Usakos. [Auret describes a typical experience of the NGK Leonard [sic] congregation's "Ovambo-Evangelis" Paulus Shidisie: "Paulus moes aan die kerkraad verslag doen. Wanneer hy 'n plaas besoek het, moes die plaaseienaar 'n vorm teken as bewys dat hy wel die plaas besoek het. Op een van die vorms het die handtekening van die plaaseienaar ontbreek, maar Paulus het in sy eie handskrif die kort maar veelseggende sin geskryf: "Hy het vir my weggeja.""]4 His timetable for his visits were organised by the ouderlings of the NGK, who were mostly the farmers involved in his farm visits. The ouderling were also responsible for his transport from one farm to the next farm. The farmers would phone each other and during the morning or midday they would bring him to the next farm. On the farms the workers would gather on the yard or in one of the garages. During his travels he took with him two bibles (one in Afrikaans, one in Oshikwanyama), the ELOK hymnbook Ehangano and a catechisme (in in Ndonga and Oshikwanyma). Hamutenya received his salary in Mariental. Hamuntenya spoke Afrikaans, Ndonga, Oshikwanyama, Herero. He could understand, but not speak Nama/Damara. With his wife and children he spoke Afrikaans. He preached in Afrikaans and Oshikwanyama, only sometimes in Herero, as there were few Herero speaking workers on the farms. If there were Nama speaking workers present, the preach was translated into their language. After a certain time in the work he was allowed to baptize and confirm, also ELOK members. In his work he had contact with ELOK pastor Max and Laukanen. In 1969 he travel for one month to Ovamboland to visit his sister and in June and July he attended a course in Engela. His teacher was Auala and the language of instruction was Ndonga. In 1970 he was transferred to Usakos, where he no longer worked in the "Driehoek", but only in the ELK congregation. The congregation pastor during that time was pastor Paulus Gowaseb. The district consisted of two congregations: Usakos and Karibib, of which Dubsis?? was also part. Here the congregation used a motorcar which he was also allowed to use for his work. (He had acquired his driver licence in 1962 with the help of RMS missionaries Dieckmann and Wessler.) In 1974 he returned to Mariental. In 1976 (on the 10.02.1976) he was transferred to Grootfontein. Now he received a monthly salary of R 300. The local ELK pastor was Zacharias Nashongo, later pastor Junius Beukes. Hamutenya retired in 1988. During its meeting of 29.01.1975, the ELK Church Board is informed by member of the congregation Mariental that the accommodation of a sister Juliane Naruses creates a problem in the congregation. Church Board therefore requests the "UK-VELKSWA" to agree to the request of Evangelist Petrus Mateus and re-locate him [seemingly from Keetmanshoop] to the North where he could get a post.
