From 1952 to 1955, Mateus Hansen served as a proper ("volledige") deacon In 1955 he joined the evangelist course at the Paulinum in Karibib. The course was split into an "A" and "B" branch at the beginning of 1956. The participants of the "A" course ended in October 1956 with an examination and the subsequent inauguration of the 9 participants as deacons. The remaining 15 participants completed the "B" course with an examination in December 1956 as evangelists. Mateus Hanse was a participant of the deacon course. After his training at the Paulinum (1955-1956) he was employed as an evangelist in Schlip. He writes in his annual report for 1965: "[...] I am here as a church leader since 15 years, but in all the years I had never experienced the problems which I had to fight against in 1965. First of all it was drunkenness at its peak and it was coupled with an unbearable, reckless life. Together with drunkenness, fornication was not to be overseen. There were cases in which the husband of one woman took the wife of another man, while everybody was aware of it. The same thing was common among the young people: young men went out with married women and married men took young girls. These circumstances are not only found once, but among all local people. But the Almighty gave me help to admonish. I fought till the bitter end, with the horsewhip ("sambok") in my one hand and the word of God - as sharp as a double-edged sword - in the other. I ended up in trouble nearly every evening, but the reckless life changed through the merciful, helping hand. [III] There is a lack of co-operation between some of the elders and me. Some of the elders are displeased that I am reporting the inhuman, reckless life of the people. They insist: "Let us leave the people in their conduct of live. If they do not listen to our words and warnings, we do not have to beat them." I tell them: "We cannot leave the people in their bad deeds, because we bear the responsibility for their souls." I then refer to Ezekiel 3, Verses 18 and 19.2 But they say that they will not follow me - because the sinful life can be traced in their own houses."3 Self-taught.
