The role of the active musician in the big Evangelist family with 16 children was filled by his first born son Petrus. Petrus was very musical and showed a keen interest in instruments. During his training as a teacher at the Augustineum he learned to play the harmonium and trumpet and used this ability an knowledge abundantly in his family during daily devotions and family meetings during Christmas and other occasions. Other children of Evangelist Pienaar also learn to play an instrument at an early stage of their life, like Maria harmonium and flute, Nikolaas harmonium and Petrina Kornelia the trumpet. Musical performances of his own children together with other musicians during church services form welcoming highlights in the work of the Evangelist. The small orchestra filled the Evangelist with pride and strengthen his position in the congregation. But more than the public acknowledgement counts the private benefit the Evangelists family has of these talents of his children: every morning and evening the family assembles around the harmonium for the devotion, singing and praying. Come what may, the daughter has to play the harmonium and accompany the members of the family with the hymns.14 The wife of Jakob Pienaar worked for white settlers in the village up to the date when the first hostel students were registered in the RMS hostel. Now she had to cook the "pap" for the hostel children, a work for which she was not paid, because it was expected of her as the wife of the evangelist.
