Oortman (Ortman, Hortman), Jan * ?, ? † . Mentioned Stals as brother-in-law of Jonker Afrikaaner a translator in Warmbad congregation.1 p.79 "In the afternoon I proposed having public service, but the interpreter [Peter Link] refused to assist, unless the mind of the chief was first known; hence I sent for Ortman, the person who, at the risk of his life, has been trying to change the minds of the people in reference to the mission, and asked his opinion. This led to a discussion and inquiry, which superseded the service."2 When Cook decided to leave Warmbad in fear of his life (after an extended conflict with the chief), it was Jan Oortman "[...] the most worthy Bundle Zwaart I have met with [...]" who convinced him to stay.3 During Alexander's visit to Warmbad he met Ortmann. In his book he calls him "[...] a worthy [in der deutschen Übersetzung "würdiger Mann"] man, and I think, a sincere Christian."4 Oortman, together with Tkauab of Modderfontein, went to Stellenbosch (a journey of nearly halve a year) to lay charge against the Boer Visagie in September/October 1791.5 Married: Children: Education: Other family members connected to RMS: Mission Stations: History with the RMS: 1 Stals 2001:79. 2 Cook 1849:38. 3 Cöök 1849:39. 4 Alexander 1838:161. 5 Stals 2009:20. --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------
