Welcome to the Kavango-Info-Site!
Kavango, one of the 13
regions of Namibia, is situated in the far North-East of one of Africans most
fascinating countries. Kavango stretches along the Okavango-River which forms
the border between Namibia and Angola.
1000 km away from
Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, Kavango has suffered from administrative
neglect during the colonial time, despite a favourable rainfall pattern and a
viable agricultural resource base.
With a population of
approximately 120 000 people an area surface of ca. 44 000 square kilometre,
Kavango has a population density of less than 3 inhabitants per square
kilometre. Considering the fact that 95% of the total population live in a
narrow strip of 5-10 km on the river terrace along the River, vast areas of
the region are not populated. As in most parts of Namibia, lack of water makes
human existence impossible in this unpopulated areas.
Together with its
magnificent river and its thickly wooded savannah, the people of Kavango are
the real treasure of Kavango. This Web-Site offers an opportunity to discover
some of this aspects and wishes to create a forum to present some of the
historical, geographical, cultural and political issues of the region.
